Heartwood can range from a lighter pale brown to a dark chocolate brown with darker brown streaks. Color can sometimes have a grey, purple, or reddish cast. Sapwood is pale yellow-gray to nearly white.

Crotch Walnut comes from a regular Black Walnut tree and is typically found close to knots in the wood or where a branch comes off the tree. Considerably more expensive than regular Black Walnut due to the relative rarity. Prices are in the mid to high range for a domestic species.
